Yip, Solo wouldn't have bombed if TLJ was good. It kind of sucks that the results were hidden this way.
By the sale figures TLJ looks like a success because people were hyped to see it. After TLJ not many people were hyped to see another SW film, regardless of what it was about. That's the real reason Solo bombed.
It's a shame too, because I would be keen to see some sequels of that.
It's not fatigue, it's lack of good, coherent, imaginative and well planned story lines. The hard core SW fan base are quite often pretty intelligent people who are just a bit disappointed with what TLJ offered. Lucasfilm can do it too, they've proved this with the other movies, Rebels and Clone Wars
JJ set a decent storyline in motion. And he did his successor the benefit of setting up a ton of mysteries and cliffhangers that all the next guy had to do was deliver the payoff to each, like well placed explosives, all throughout the movie.
Instead, Rian Johnson decides to scrap all of that and basically chuck the bird at the entire fan base. What he and Kennedy did was basically make fun of Star Wars fans as being a bunch of pathetic, middle aged geeks that need to grow up and get a life. THAT came through loud and clear in that last movie. He was laughing at us.
I like JJ, but I don't think Disney is going to recover from that level of "Own Goal". Absent a miracle, it's not happening. Star Wars died with Ep 8. It's flat lined. At least we'll always have the first two trilogies, Ep 7 and Rogue One.
I thought TFA was incredibly lazy and just "meh" overall. No interesting characters, no new plot points that weren't just recycled stuff from the OT. It was... Fine. But that's the best thing I can really say about it. Stuff just happens without any attempt to get me to connect to it. I'm expected to connect to it because its almost exactly the same stuff that went on in the OT. Lazy.
TLJ, on the other hand was actually a decent movie. FAR from perfect, but at least SOME of the characters had arcs of their own. I didn't know the end of the movie before I watched it. There are MANY problems with TLJ, but I saw it as a step in the right direction for the series, and gave me hope that not every movie will just be a thrown-together collection of memories that I'm expected to enjoy because I already enjoyed them in other movies. It gave me hope that writers and directors were going to try new things and take the series in new directions.
I haven't seen Solo yet. I was turned off to it by the trailers that they put out that made it look like it was going to be terrible. It may be good... I don't know... I haven't seen it yet. I just remember how awful the acting and the writing looked from the trailers, so I didn't care to go see it. Didn't have anything to do with TLJ for me.
Yeah RJ's selfishness is bordering on the unbelievable. There really is no reason to see Ep 9 now.
That's probably how most people felt when Solo came out approx 6 months after.
They were still in shock!
I watched Solo again last night... for the 1st time since the theater, (intentionally WAY after it's opening😁) I honestly liked it less than I did the 1st time. That's not good. For me the reason I love Star Wars so much is because they get better and better the story becomes more personal and deeper for me. OT and PT, so far Rogue One is I think the best of the Disney 4 and frankly I don't think that's saying much? The characters were meh and the the 1st hour or so was a drag... loved the ending battle. If it was me, I would've used that opportunity to have a proper end (and introduction for that matter to the people who don't watch the shows) for Ahsoka, I would've incorporated characters from Rebels and I would've had an EPIC battle between Ahsoka and Vader had her go out that way...
As far as fatigue... it's not fatigue that's just a politically correct way of saying we KNOW and HEAR you, we're making bad movies!

i actually just saw Solo for the first time, 2 nights ago - and i thought it was decent. RH did a good job casting it & the story was fairly plausible, imo. that being said, i can only assume that if one were to closely inspect L3-37, you would find KK's fingerprints all over it. that is my only major beef w/the whole picture after one viewing. i still like Rogue One better as a "one off" Star Wars film, but i give it 6.5/10 llama beans...
