i am looking at the v2 board for a rgb setup. it shows a input jack for the recharge port with 3 connections. is the 3rd connection just an extra ground? could i just solder the two wires together from the board and negative side of the battery on an input jack with 2 lugs?

No, the input jack usually has a switch in it, so that when a plug is inserted, it is connected to the battery, but the board is *disconnected* from the battery. There are other ways to wire things up, and a two-lug recharge port will work, but you won't be able to use a kill key to cut the power to the board.
