1) yes 2) the styles are generally independent of number of buttons, however prop files (which controls gestures and such) may not be. 3) backing up is possible, but it won't give you the config files. However, if LGT did their job right, the files they used should be on the SD card.
if LGT configured it right it will show up as a drive, a serial port and you can connect to it through WebUSB: fredrik.hubbe.net/lightsaber/webusb.html If you wish to program it from arduino, you may need additional drivers, depending on what OS your computer uses.
Styles are not files, they are things that look sort of like this: StylePtr<IgnitionDelay<600, InOutHelper<OnSpark<BlastFadeout<LocalizedClash<Magenta, White, 40, 50>, White, 200>, White, 400>, 100, 1200, Black>>() Styles controls the color and effects on the blade(s).
On windows, you will need to use Zadig to install a driver to be able to program the chip. To install the driver you need to put the proffieboard in bootloader mode, which is usually done by pressing BOOT+RESET. Pressing BOOT+RESET does not actually change any programming on the board, it just makes it start a different program.
