It's the same saber.
It's the same concept as the Graflex. You change it subtly each movie so that people have to decide which one they like best or collect them all.
The Graflex 2.0 and the Graflex replica Roman's is set to release soon were both designed to be ANH, ESB, or TFA. In actuality it's 4: because what about Anakin's in ROTS? They should have made them so you could choose that option too.
Same concept with this. They are always trying to visually improve the sabers. Some people like the changes, some people don't, but it is meant to be the same saber.

It hasn't changed that much... it's got a touch more detail on it and some engraved styles, but that could have been done in the time between Clone Wars and Rebels... we've still got a lot of history about it to learn Only if maul is the one who did the etching and I don't think he's the type lol Remember he won the weapon after his dual to become leader and I would presume picked it back up after he and sidious left following their fight. But as you say, it's been around 10 years or so.

Nope no crystal guys, remember this is not a lightsaber as you would usually understand them. This predates what we know as the lightsaber. This was a relic stolen from the jedi temple. Surely, even the earliest lightsabers were powered by crystals?

no clue, literally we know nothing about how it works, why it's black, what powers it... hell, we don't even know who made it
"When the Darksaber's blade was activated by pressing its activation stud, the hum and pitch of the blade was notably higher than contemporary lightsabers, and the blade gave off a sound like a whistle when it was swung through the air. When the Darksaber came into contact with another object or an opposing lightsaber, the blade screeched, and the white outer aura that surrounded the black core of the blade crackled."
That's literally the description we have of it... we've never seen a crystal, power supply, or anything being talked about for it.

I don't really see the need for a CC in this one. It's probably going to be a tough install as it is. When I saw the Rebels version it looked off to me because of the background lighting. It looked a little thick and clunky, as well. Those reference photos looked a hundred times better. The polished version looked fantastic. At this point, I'd probably take either version because I really do like the TCW version, too. I guess I'm easy to please.

Surely, even the earliest lightsabers were powered by crystals? Found this detail. Darkswords were an ancient type of sword made from a special material that could parry lightsabers. Unlike cortosis, this material did not possess the ability to temporarily deactivate a lightsaber blade it made contact with. And this link, which states a dark core not a crystal. In all other saber reference for material normal sabers state a crystal core. starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Darksaber_(lightsaber)/Legends

Oh ok, to me that sounds a shame but if a crystal isn't right for this saber it just isn't right. I am positive they will be a beauty no matter what is decided in the build. Sorry Darth Ryô, I was only interested in this as an everything saber including one of your fabulously designed crystal chambers, kindly remove me as a seriously interested party for this saber without a crystal chamber.

Does it really need to be a crystal? Nope. it states a dark core so, some other cool looking chamber could be added if there's room.

The saber hilt is prob going to be thin anyway, so it remains to be seen if it can even hold a tri cree or if some other sort of light solution will need to be used, nevermind a chamber.
If there is some sort of slide out chamber, maybe we can invoke Noah's skills and have him make some sort of oblong glass thing like a prolate spheroid similar in shape to an American football or rugby ball, in order to get it to fit.
It's a real challenge, if they want the hilt to look anything like that new graphic of the hilt on the saber stand in Maul's ship, from Rebels. It's going to be a challenge all around I think.
edit
Looks like they might have to put any sort of reveal up in the neck of the hilt, close to the light source. The lower hilt looks like it would be lucky to contain a soundboard on it's side, speaker on it's side in series to the soundboard, with speaker vents somewhere either where the palm of the hand would be, or opposite to that, and maybe a pair of smaller batteries side by side.
Needless to say, this is going to be an very interesting project. People should get in on this if only for the fact that there may not be anything else like it, it's unique.

List finally updated, hope I didn't forget anybody but it seems ok to me (otherwise please tell me ^^). where should i keep my eyes out for the official sign up threads? im so paranoid about missing this run Not to worry, for now we are just at the interest phase (but it seems that we'll go for it, NerforXlab review the point very soon). The official Sign-up thread will be widely communicated in advance, you won't miss it. And I think this will be for Q3 2017 anyway, we have time (as the next run is first on Ezra / Kanan).

Knowing the q3 will be the dark saber puts my mind at rest I have been anxiously checking daily fearing not to miss this. Between this and the blind knight and rebel orphan I'm over joyed for 2017!! Thank you for everything!!

Depending on timing of release, price and the like, I would likely be interested in the Rebels build of this... Though being I am already eyeing the BK/Orphan set... that will also likely factor in on the final decision as well. If anything I would likely figure out something as this would definitely be one the interesting/unique list....

Latest trailer for Rebels totally changed my mind.
Put me down for a Rebels Version (slot #19)
Thank you again! Can't wait to hear when this and the Blind Knight/Rebel Orphan run begins!

I'm probably getting way ahead of myself here, but is there any chance of a display stand for this saber? Obviously most stands out there are designed to cradle a more rounded saber, and while they might technically support this saber and keep it off the ground, I much prefer seeing this saber displayed upright - like Maul had it recently in Rebels. I'm not suggesting Maul's stand be replicated exactly, as it sets the saber too high up for my taste, but I would definitely pay good money for a stand that can display this saber in a similar manner.

I'm interested in the Rebel version, but a bit concerned I won't be able to afford one as I'm on the orphan run. So, if the timing is right, I would love to get one!
